The connection between animal and human abuse

The connection between animal and human abuse
Recently during research time in Exhibition I stumbled upon this site which got me thinking. I learned that a main reason animal and human abuse are connected is because they both could be because of neglect! Before I explain what I learned, the animal/human abuse I'm talking about is the kind when you beat them over silly reasons and don't give them enough food or water. In the human abuse case it could be that you can't support your family or afford your monthly rent. It's the same with animal abuse except instead of monthly rents, it's paying for the animal's needs (litter box, leash). Studies show that if a child commits animal abuse, then they're likely to do human abuse too. I got that from this sentence in the article: Longitudinal studies show that chronic physical aggression (e.g., animal cruelty) by elementary school boys increases the likelihood they will commit continued physical violence as well as other nonviolent forms of delinquency during adolescence. Animal abuse actually usually leads to human abuse for reasons like neglect (as I said before) and mental illness. This site made me realize animal abuse is quite similar to human abuse and can sometimes be the cause of it.

  1. An interesting blog post Jude. A connection I see here is with cyclic patterns - where something gets repeated time and time again. It is indeed concerning to see the cyclical nature of abuse; as you wrote, when children abuse animals they will likely abuse people later in life. Raising awareness will hopefully be one way you can make a difference.

  3. Thanks for sharing your learning from what you have read Jude. One of the best ways to make change is to understand why it is happening and looking for connections such as this can help identify some of the bigger issues that need to be addressed in our society.

  4. Hello Jude
I am Jai in your Exhibition group. I think that this is a very good and rich post because you have made loads of connections and then have not stopped there but then given good strong evidence. You have been researching and focusing a lot now.
